Assistant Director of Special Education

Under the direction of the Director of Special Education, this position provides leadership, coordination, oversight, and support for District special education programs and services. The Assistant Director assists in the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of programs for students with disabilities; supports compliance with federal and state special education laws and regulations; collaborates with school administrators, staff, families, and community agencies to ensure the provision of a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment (LRE); coordinates assigned special education programs and services; assists with personnel supervision and program development; and supports continuous improvement efforts to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Education Required: Bachelor's and Master's Degree in a related field required; Doctorate desirable. Experience Required: Minimum five (5) years of successful teaching and/or administrative experience required. Licenses, Certifications, Bonding and/or Testing Required: Valid Administrative Services Credential (required); Valid CA Driver's License and evidence of insurability; Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance, and negative pre-employment drug screen test/negative TB results (upon hire).

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES to include District-wide leadership and supervision in the following areas: Assists in the planning, implementation, supervision, and evaluation of District special education programs and services to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local requirements and alignment with District goals. Provides leadership, technical assistance, and support to site administrators, teachers, related service providers, and support staff regarding special education laws, regulations, instructional practices, and student services. Monitors District compliance with IDEA, California Education Code, SELPA requirements, procedural safeguards, timelines, and reporting obligations; investigates complaints and compliance concerns and recommends corrective actions as necessary. Coordinates assigned special education programs and services, including specialized academic instruction, related services, mental health supports, transition services, and inclusive educational opportunities for students with disabilities. Supports the development and implementation of legally compliant Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), participates in complex student meetings and proceedings, and assists in resolving disputes through collaborative problem-solving processes. Supervises and evaluates assigned personnel; participates in the recruitment, selection, assignment, training, and professional development of certificated, classified, and management staff. Assists with the development, administration, and monitoring of budgets, grants, contracts, staffing allocations, caseloads, and program resources to ensure effective service delivery. Collaborates with SELPA representatives, community agencies, county offices, nonpublic schools and agencies, families, and educational partners to coordinate services and improve outcomes for students with disabilities. Compiles, analyzes, and utilizes student, program, and compliance data to evaluate effectiveness, support continuous improvement efforts, prepare required reports, and inform decision-making. Assists with the preparation of Governing Board reports, policy and administrative regulation updates, and other communications related to special education programs and services; attends meetings and performs other related duties as assigned.
