Social Media & Communications Intern

  2026-04-22     Community Innovations     Irvine,CA
Description:

About Us

Community Innovations Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to make artificial intelligence accessible and useful for the communities most often left out of the tech conversation. We deliver AI literacy and applied training to residents, affordable consulting to small businesses, and mentorship-driven projects to student innovators. Our programs bring together technologists, entrepreneurs, nonprofits, and neighbors around a simple question: what does this community actually need, and how can emerging technology help?

The Role

We are looking for a Social Media & Communications Intern to help us tell CIF's story, grow our online presence, and keep our community informed about programs and events. This is a hands-on role with real ownership. You will not be fetching coffee.

What You'll Do

  • Plan and publish content across our social channels (LinkedIn, Instagram, Meetup, and others as relevant)
  • Draft newsletters, event announcements, and program updates
  • Capture photos, short videos, and quotes at CIF events, workshops, and hackathons
  • Help maintain the events and news sections of our website
  • Brainstorm creative ways to highlight our programs, student innovators, and partner organizations
  • Track basic engagement metrics and share what is working with the team

What You'll Gain

  • A real portfolio of published work for an established nonprofit
  • Direct experience running communications for a mission-driven organization
  • Mentorship from CIF leadership and exposure to the AI and nonprofit ecosystems in Orange County
  • A strong reference and recommendation for a job well done
  • Academic credit (we will coordinate with your school's internship office)
  • A modest completion stipend at the end of a successful semester

Who We're Looking For

You might be a strong fit if you are:

  • A current student or recent graduate in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, digital media, nonprofit management, or a related field
  • Able to write in a clear, friendly, professional voice
  • Familiar with at least one major social platform as a creator, not just a user
  • Organized enough to keep a content calendar on track without constant reminders
  • Curious about AI and interested in how technology can serve communities
  • Local to Orange County and able to attend some events in person

Bonus experience: Canva, basic photo or video editing, Mailchimp or similar email tools, and any prior work running socials for a club, class, or organization.

Logistics

  • Schedule: Approximately 5 to 10 hours per week
  • Duration: One semester, with the option to extend
  • Location: Hybrid. Most work is remote. Occasional in-person event coverage in the Irvine and greater Orange County area.
  • Compensation: This is an unpaid internship structured for academic credit. A completion stipend is available at the end of the semester, and we reimburse approved event-related expenses.
  • Start Date: Flexible, with a preference for the start of the semester
