The Position

BASIC FUNCTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform routine day or evening custodial activities at an assigned school site or other assigned District facility; perform minor maintenance and repair to equipment and systems; maintain buildings and adjacent grounds areas in a clean, orderly and secure condition.

Any combination equivalent to: Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed below.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Licenses and Automobile Requirements: Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.

Insurance Requirements: Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle that meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continues to maintain insurability.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

KNOWLEDGE OF:

Proper methods, techniques, materials, tools and equipment used in modern custodial work. Modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning floors, chalk/white boards, carpets, furniture, walls and fixtures. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Requirements of maintaining District buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Appropriate safety precautions and procedures. Proper lifting techniques.

ABILITY TO:

Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned school site or other District facility. Maintain District buildings and adjacent grounds in a clean, orderly and secure condition. Use cleaning materials and equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Operate a variety of custodial equipment. Maintain tools and equipment in clean working order. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events. Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair. Perform minor non-technical repairs. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Meet schedules and time lines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Employees in this classification stand, sit, walk, lift and carry up to 50 lbs or more with assistance, carry stoop, bend repeatedly, use fingers, wrists or hands repetitively, use both hands and legs simultaneously, push, pull, maintain balance, stoop/bend, kneel, reach over head, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, see small details, operate custodial equipment, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment, drive a vehicle, and use a telephone.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Employees in this classification work outside and inside, with dangerous machinery and sharp objects, in damp or wet areas with poor ventilation, may be exposed to heat over 90 degrees and temperature changes. May be exposed to severe contagious illnesses/diseases, heights, loud noises, fumes, dust, chemicals, odors or toxic materials, and electrical hazards. Employees may work with machinery with moving parts, moving vehicles, and work with ladders/scaffolding. May use a respirator, eye protection, hard hat, latex gloves and work boots. Employees work in direct contact with the public, students, and other District staff, high volume of work and tight deadlines, continuously changing priorities and interruptions, without guidance from supervisor.
Examples of Duties

General Custodial Assignments:

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

Perform routine custodial activities at an assigned District school site during a day or evening shift; sweep, scrub, mop, wax and polish floors; vacuum rugs and carpets in classrooms, offices, workshops and other work areas; spot clean and shampoo carpets; clean classrooms, cafeterias, lounges, offices and other facilities as assigned; empty waste receptacles spot mop spills; remove gum, debris and graffiti as needed; clean and disinfect drinking fountains and restroom facilities including sinks, toilets and urinals; fill dispensers with towels, soap, toilet paper and other items; clean mirrors, tile and windows; remove debris from clogged toilets, floor drains, and sinks; dust and polish furniture and woodwork; operate custodial equipment such as vacuums, mops, small hand and power tools, buffer/scrubber machines and other equipment as assigned; lock and unlock doors and gates as appropriate.

Perform various custodial activities including replacing light bulbs and tubes, cleaning chalkboards and erasers and emptying pencil sharpeners; clean tables, chairs and floors after breakfast, lunch and recess periods as assigned;perform minor repairs to furniture as needed;maintain security of assigned areas according to established guidelines; set alarms as appropriate; report safety, sanitary and fire hazards to appropriate authority; report need for maintenance repairs to appropriate authority; respond to emergency custodial requests as needed; move and arrange furniture and equipment; prepare classrooms, gymnasiums and other facilities for special events or meetings; set-up and assemble chairs, tables and other furniture and equipment for special events and activities; clean up furniture, equipment and debris following these events; perform minor grounds maintenance duties as assigned; participate in the thorough cleaning and restoration of campus facilities during vacation periods; perform related duties as assigned.

RECRUITMENT TYPE: Open - Anyone may apply.

CERTIFICATION TYPE: Substitute List - Qualified candidates, or Eligibles, who pass all testing stages will be placed on one eligibility list. Eligibles will be contacted in rank order to be processed as a substitute employee by Human Resources.

SCREENING PROCESS

The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of a(n): application screening, initial qualifications screening, documentation/certification screening, and supplemental application screening. The stated qualifications for the position represent only the minimum requirements and do not guarantee qualification for examination or placement on an eligibility list.

EXAMINATION PROCESS

The examination may consist of any combination of a(n): training and experience (T&E) evaluation, written knowledge test, hands on/performance test, structured panel interview, situational judgement interview, or other type of exam of fitness for duty. All parts of the examination process are job related. A passing score must be attained on each portion of the exam to advance to the next stage and ultimate placement on an eligibility list.

DISABILITY ACCOMMODATION

Requests must be signed by your medical doctor, school psychologist, or learning consultant as appropriate and must be on provider letterhead and contain an actual signature.

EXAM PROTESTS

Protest of any part of the exam process must be in writing and submitted to the Personnel Director no later than five (5) working days from the date you participated in the exam. Any protest must include rationale to support the protest and shall include supporting documentation or references. Protests must be based on illegal discrimination, abuse of discretion, or procedure/process error. Protests should NOT be based on receiving unexpected results. We cannot be responsible for lost mail, misdirected mail, or failure of mail to be delivered after it has been entrusted to the U.S. Postal Service.

ESTABLISHMENT OF ELIGIBILITY

Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after six (6) months or one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.

OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT

Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Anaheim Union High School District Human Resources, Classified Office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a physical examination, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT

All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may receive advanced step placement with an approval from Human Resources. Requests for advanced step must be submitted in writing to the Human Resources office before the employee's first day of work. Approval will be based on the following criteria:

A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.

B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.

C) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.
