Sterile Processing Technician

Sterile Processing Technicians are responsible for instrument and medical device decontamination, organization, and packaging for surgeries in an operating room. In addition to sterilizing documents, SPTs record everything they do and keep track of any apparatus deliveries or changes. SPTs do not work directly with patients. Sterile Processing Technicians generally work in a hospital and/or outpatient clinic setting.

Education/Requirements:

• High School education is required, some states also require the completion of a certificate program.
• Program lengths vary but they tend to require anywhere from ten weeks to two years, though most are between 4 to 8 months.
