Position Summary

Under the administrative direction of the Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) serves as the highest-level senior manager over various nursing-related patient care departments and units within AHMC Anaheim Regional Medical Center. The CNO manages, directs, plans and coordinates the functions and activities of assigned areas; oversees and administers assigned patient care programs and services; assists the hospital's Interim CEO and Board of Directors in the development, formulation and implementation of strategic plans and serves as part of the senior management team.

Tasks / Duties / Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and directs hospital's nursing units and other departments as assigned.
  • Directs personnel management activities; guides subordinate directors, managers and supervisors in selection, hiring, training, performance appraisal, documentation of deficiencies, recognition and disciplinary action.
  • Participates in program evaluation by identifying quality improvement indicators for client/service outcomes, nursing practice and organizational structure.
  • Ensures appropriate nurse staffing and clinical care per regulatory and hospital policies.
  • Establishes and directs the nursing model; reviews and evaluates administrative and clinical procedures; oversees development and implementation of policies and standards including quality assurance.
  • Consults with other management and supervisory personnel on patient care issues.
  • Participates in hospital-wide strategic planning activities.
  • Monitors and evaluates new or revised regulatory agency and industry laws, regulations and standards applicable to assigned areas.
  • Represents assigned areas to Corporate, identifying issues, resolving problems and sharing information.
  • Directs preparation and maintenance of nursing records, reports and statistics.
  • Oversees and reports on risk management strategies, including identification and monitoring of nursing-sensitive quality and safety indicators.
  • Confers with education and training staff to ensure staff training needs are met.
  • Conducts and participates in staff and committee meetings; serves on task forces and commissions as assigned.
  • Directs budgeting and financial planning for nursing services, including staffing, equipment, supplies and capital outlay requests.
  • Prepares or reviews special studies, reports and documents, ensuring proper completion of records.
  • Ensures compliance with quality assurance, safety, infection control and environmental procedures.
  • Develops succession planning, improves staff morale and reduces turnover; implements recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Prioritizes projects and manages time to maximize efficiencies.
  • Utilizes management processes: gathers data, identifies issues, sets objectives, implements and monitors outcomes.
  • Ensures standards are established and communicated to staff for effective operation.
  • Possesses technical knowledge to develop spreadsheets, reports and budgets.
  • Knowledge of wage and hour regulations, OSHA, workers' compensation, Department of Labor, EEOC, leave laws and company policies.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources on administrative and labor proceedings.
  • Engages in continuous self-improvement and training activities for employees.
  • Represents the organization professionally at all times.
  • Follows approved processes and procedures and ensures subordinates do the same.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education / Training / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing (required).
  • Master's degree in Nursing (required).
  • Current California Registered Nurse license.
  • Five years of increasingly responsible nursing, clinical and administrative management experience in an acute‑care hospital, overseeing multiple nursing areas (e.g., Education, ED, Subacute, Rehab, ICU, Med/Surg, Women's Services, Perioperative, Infection Control, Nursing Administration, Telemetry).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and computer skills.
  • Experience in budget preparation and operation.

Licenses / Certifications

  • Valid California Registered Nurse license.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.

Thorough knowledge of:

  • Personnel management principles and practices.
  • Principles and practices of nursing that optimize patient care.
  • Principles of nursing administration and organization.
  • Patient care standards mandated by regulatory agencies.
  • Acute care hospital policies, procedures and routines.
  • Laws and regulations governing hospital operations, nursing practices, medication administration and consents, including Title 22, the Joint Commission, and the Nurse Practice Act.

Working knowledge of:

  • Standard computer‑based business applications.
  • General financial principles for budget development, monitoring and justification.

Skill and ability to:

  • Plan, organize, develop and direct nursing and related services for an acute care hospital.
  • Manage and supervise work of others directly and through subordinate managers.
  • Appraise performance, counsel and train employees and develop disciplinary actions.
  • Direct the development and implementation of effective policies and procedures.
  • Evaluate quality and effectiveness of nursing services and implement improvements.
  • Interpret and apply nursing and hospital administrative laws, rules and regulations.
  • Collect, interpret and evaluate narrative and statistical data on administrative, fiscal and clinical matters.
  • Prepare complex reports, memoranda and written materials.
  • Analyze and resolve complex problems related to nursing service management.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, presenting findings and recommendations to boards, commissions and committees.
  • Provide excellent public relations and customer service.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with physicians, nurses, administrators, managers, vendors and other health care personnel.
