University Laboratory Animal Resources (ULAR) provides care for laboratory animals in support of UC Irvine's research and teaching missions, in compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the use of vertebrate animals for research and teaching, and to maintain accreditation by AAALAC International.





Responsibilities:

The incumbent, under the supervision of the ULAR Senior Veterinarian, will provide veterinary technical care for laboratory animals at UCI. Incumbent will maintain accurate medical records, perform diagnostic procedures, physical examinations, treatments, necropsies, anesthesia support, surgical support, and post-operative care. Incumbent will conduct procedures related to the animal health monitoring (sentinel) program, including collecting and submitting samples, and communicating test results to the veterinarian. The incumbent will participate and/or conduct training and education of the campus researchers and laboratory personnel on proper care and use of research animals.



Qualifications:
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
  • Graduation from an AVMA or State of California approved animal health technician program. Bachelors degree in a field of biology related to animal science or zoology preferred. Required
  • Prior experience in working with animals in a research or clinical setting. Required
  • Ability to perform a variety of animal research and husbandry procedures for a variety of species, including but not limited to anesthesia induction, anesthesia monitoring, aseptic technique, restraint, injections, blood collection, and necropsy without detailed supervision. Required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in order to communicate clearly and tactfully with a broad variety of people verbally or in writing. Required
  • Proven ability to prioritize tasks and redirect emphasis when requested or required by special circumstances or additional assignment. Required
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a team member, follow directions, work independently, or in shared assignment with others. Required
  • Proven ability to adhere to departmental attendance policies and standards. Required
  • Intermediate computer skills, sufficient to enter data into electronic databases, retrieve and sort data from electronic databases, send and receive emails, prepare written and audiovisual training materials, and prepare written reports. Required
  • Knowledge and familiarity with local, state and federal animal welfare regulations and guidelines. Preferred
  • AALAS certification at (or eligibility for) ALAT level or higher. Preferred
  • Prior experience in teaching/training. Preferred
